According to FAO, Africa generates over 500 million tons of agricultural waste annually, but less than 5% is energy-utilized. With improved small-scale digestion and gas engine technologies, manure, crop residues, and processing waste are now powering farms and communities.
In Rwanda, biogas started in institutional kitchens, now expanding to household digesters. In Uganda and Ethiopia, both individual and centralized systems are piloted, supporting household energy, lighting, and even small irrigation setups.
